The Wishing Place

How did the Make-A-Wish Foundation® begin?

The Make-A-Wish Foundation® was inspired in 1980 by the love that a family and friends had for a seven-year-old boy named Chris. Chris' dream of becoming a police officer for a day, was granted by a community that rallied together to make a wish come true. Just four days before he died, Chris spent a very special day working side by side with state highway patrolmen. Chris was even made an honorary state trooper, the first and only in Arizona Chris' mother and those who helped to grant his wish created the Make-A-Wish Foundation of America in his memory, paving the way for more than 97,000 wishes that have been granted worldwide since 1980.

Who can receive a wish?

The mission of the Make-A-Wish Foundation is to grant the wishes of children between the ages of 2 ½ and 18 with life-threatening illnesses. Children must be referred to the Foundation and determined to be medically eligible for a wish prior to their 18th birthday by their treating physician.

What are the most requested wishes?

Most wish requests fall into the following categories:

I wish to go. . .   Child on the beach

Some Make-A-Wish kids want to travel to their favorite theme park, while others want to visit an exotic beach, go on a cruise, see snow for the first time, or attend a major sporting event or concert.

I wish to be. . .   Child at the Zoo

Children search the depths of their imagination when they wish to be someone for a day—a fireman, a police officer or a model, for instance.

I wish to meet. . .   Child with cheerleaders

Many want to meet their favorite athlete, recording artist, television personality, movie star, politician or other public figure.

I wish to have. . .   Child Playing

Children often wish for a special gift, like a computer, a tree house, or something that they have coveted for a long time.

What is the Wishing Place?

When Team Endeavor asked representatives of the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Southern Nevada for their most desirable “wish,” they expressed a critical need for expanded office space so that the Make-A-Wish staff and volunteers could more effectively administer multitude of day-to-day tasks necessary to accommodate the wishes of local Wish Kids® and their families.

The Wishing Place will include staff offices, meeting rooms, as well as facilities to accommodate on-site group events in a pleasant, conveniently located setting.

This monumental endeavor will be realized only through the generous charitable donations of private individuals and charitable organizations. These donations can be monetary as well as in-kind services for the design and/or construction of the facility.
